Lauren’s story
Transforming challenges into change

The experience of living and working remotely was one of the most vivid and incredible experiences of my life, and I will be forever grateful to the people who made that time of my life.

Driven by a long-held desire to work as a Social Worker with some of Australia’s most underserved communities, Lauren left her urban life and moved three and a half thousand kilometres to a remote area of Australia. While Lauren has traveled extensively, she acknowledges she was unprepared for the systemic poverty, racism, and violence she would encounter while supporting those within the remote and isolated communities where she worked.
Lauren worked with both adult and child survivors of violent crime. Her caseload predominantly consisted of individuals who had endured significant acts of violence, leaving them traumatised not only by their experiences, but often also by their subsequent involvement with the criminal justice system.
Despite the regional coordination aspect of her role, there was no clinical supervision, nor recognition of the impacts of hearing repeated stories of violence and abuse while holding an impossibly large caseload.
It wasn’t long before the burden of this trauma and workload began to compound, leading to vicarious trauma, moral injury and burn out.In frontline support and human services professions, discussions around ‘vicarious trauma’ and ‘burnout’ are common, yet Lauren admits she had no idea what these terms really meant and was unable to recognise them, let alone know how to address them. At this stage in her career Lauren had never encountered the term ‘moral injury.’ Despite the growing strain, she continued to work, encouraged by both her employer and a personal resolve to ‘be better,’ ‘try harder,’ and ‘get on with it.’
